Victory for Low Vision Community: Mandatory Sound Installation in Silent Cars Set for 2025!

We're thrilled to share the news of mandatory sound installation in silent cars by 2025, a direct result of the collective advocacy of many working organisations working with people with low vision, including See Differently. It's a significant step forward in ensuring safety for all road users.

Starting November 2025, a new Australia Design Rule will mandate the installation of Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems (AVAS) in new electric, hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, including cars, trucks, and buses. This measure aims to ensure that pedestrians can audibly detect these vehicles as they approach.

This mandate, proposed by the Federal Department of Infrastructure, received strong support from state and territory governments, the blind and low vision community, and vehicle manufacturers. The introduction of AVAS is estimated to prevent 68 fatalities and over 5,000 injuries.
