RSB Ambassador Rachael Leahcar singing

Rachael's Voice

Hi, my name’s Rachael and I am an RSB Ambassador!

I’m here because like the RSB, I want to make a difference to the lives of South Australians who are blind or vision impaired – people who are just like me.

I was born with a degenerative eye condition called Retinits Pigmentosa (RP) and I am legally blind. An early symptom of RP is night blindness, followed by the loss of the outer areas of vision, progressing to tunnel vision (like looking through a pinhole) and often increasing to complete blindness over time.

I recently celebrated my 18th birthday, but unlike most 18 year olds, I have just 10 per cent vision remaining. This hasn’t stopped me from doing the things I love to do.

My love of music started at a very early age. Today, I am a professional singer and I can play the piano and the flute. I have competed in international singing competitions, and performed on a television program watched by viewers all over the world. RSB Ambassador Rachael Leahcar walking with a white cane

I suppose you could say I am lucky, but I would not have achieved many things in my life without the support of my family and friends, my local community and organisations like the Royal Society for the Blind (RSB).

The RSB provided me with Orientation and Mobility training, including how to use my white cane. This gave me the confidence to catch buses, go shopping and other day-to-day things that teenagers like to do!

I encourage everyone to see the world through my eyes and support the Royal Society for the Blind of SA today. Your donation has the potential to change someone’s life, like the RSB has changed mine.
