Why would someone need an RSB Guide Dog?
19 year old Joshua is just one boy who desperately needed an RSB Guide Dog.
Joshua has Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) a disease he was born with, but which gets progressively worse as you get older.
In simple terms, for Joshua having RP is like having tunnel vision. Joshua can see straight ahead but he has no side vision.
As his eyesight was getting worse, Joshua was finding it more difficult to travel around and live life the way he wanted. He was getting frustrated that he didn’t have as much freedom as he used to. To help with this, Joshua was referred to the RSB and he was elated when he found out that he was eligible for an RSB Guide Dog.
How does the RSB help?
Joshua says “the RSB trained Victor and myself on how to work together. I have always wanted to go to University so they helped us find the safest way to travel there and back. We walk from my house to the bus stop and then catch one bus which takes over an hour. I tend to stick to the outside of the campus but I can easily get to everywhere I need to go.”
How does an RSB Guide Dog help?
“Before the RSB, life was challenging. I had a tough time getting around. Now life has become much easier. It has been great, I’ve been able to get out and travel around a lot more. If I didn’t have Victor getting around would be really difficult, especially using stairs.”
The RSB currently has a waiting list of people like Joshua who are eligible to have an RSB Guide Dog but are having to wait until we can provide a dog for them. The main reason is funding, as it costs in excess of $25,000 to breed, raise and train each RSB Guide Dog. But their value to someone like Joshua is immeasurable.
