Eligibility for Services
A person who has experienced vision loss either due to an eye condition or other reason (eg. trauma) that cannot be corrected by glasses is eligible to be referred by a medical professional to access RSB services.
The RSB’s Low Vision Centre (LVC) is also happy to help people in the early stages of vision loss with advice on lighting and information for future reference.
The first step for new clients
When referred to the RSB, your client will have access to the RSB Low Vision Centre (LVC). The LVC’s primary goal is to assist persons with a vision impairment to optimise the use of their existing vision.
This will include meeting with a Counsellor, an Optometrist and Ophthalmologist via the LVC Clinic to assess the client’s needs. Depending on the needs of the client, we can arrange access to a wide range of daily living aids and magnifiers, in addition to RSB’s many other services such as independent living / orientation and mobility training, counselling services, print alternatives, and employment services.
RSB staff will ensure clients are aware of all the services available to them and ease any anxieties they may experience about their vision loss.
Referring your clients to the RSB
To refer your client, a report is required that states the eye condition and visual acuity. Further information about any treatment being received and the reason for the referral would also be of benefit.
A referral pad can be posted to you or you can
download a referral form here (PDF 92KB). Please contact the Low Vision Centre on (08) 8232 4777 if you require more information.
What you can expect from the RSB
The RSB works closely with eye care professionals in particular to ensure that people experiencing vision loss are receiving direct and relevant care before accessing any of the RSB’s services.
‘Open nights’ are held at the Low Vision Centre allowing Optometrists, Ophthalmologists and other medical professionals to view the facilities and observe the many daily living aids and adaptive technology on offer to RSB clients. For information about upcoming open nights, please email
