Frequently Asked Questions
| What does it mean to be ‘legally blind’? |
Approximately 2 per cent of people with a vision impairment are totally blind. Other individuals will have varying scales of vision depending on their field of vision and acuity. |
| How do employees with a vision impairment utilise a computer system? |
Screen magnification and screen reader software assists people with reduced or total vision loss to effectively operate computers. |
| What other technical assistance can be provided for employees in the workplace? |
A wide range of Adaptive Technologies are available to employees and employers through RSB Employment Services.

| How do I ensure the safety of my employees? |
Employees who are blind or vision impaired should undergo standard OH&S training within your workplace. Further assistance can be provided both from the RSB Employment Services and other support agencies. |
| Do we need to educate our staff with regard to vision loss? |
Existing employees may benefit from an awareness session at a staff meeting, which can be delivered by your local support agency. |
| What is the Workplace Modification Scheme? |
The Workplace Modification Scheme is designed to assist employees who are blind or vision impaired with the use of specialist equipment, such as Adaptive Technology hardware/software. This scheme supports employees to undertake their duties in the workplace at no cost to the employer or employee. |
| What is the Supported Wage Scheme? |
The Supported Wage Scheme is designed to assist employees who are not able to reach full productivity. Individuals’ wages are assessed against productivity standards and a proportionate wage is paid, based on the assessed productivity levels. |
