Neurological Vision Loss Project
Each year, over 7,000 South Australians are hospitalised with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) caused either by stroke or trauma. Of these, between 30%-35% suffer some form of Neurological Vision Loss (NVL). The number of people with an ABI will continue to rise due to the increasing incidence of diabetes, obesity and overall ageing of the population, and therefore the incidence of Neurological Vision Loss will also increase.
The Royal Society for the Blind (RSB) has identified the need to improve the identification and rehabilitation of NVL. To achieve this, the RSB has commenced a neurological research project, in partnership with Neuro Vision Technology Pty Ltd, and sponsored by the Bill & Jean Henson Trust (managed by Perpetual).
This project will use new technologies to examine the effectiveness of an innovative new vision rehabilitation program, and will measure each participants’ improvement against a range of functional and ‘quality of life’ measures.
Mr Andrew Daly, Executive Director of the RSB says, “This project will measure the success of current rehabilitation protocols and new technologies towards increasing the independence and integration of people with NVL into the community.”
The project will be conducted over a two year period and the results will form part of an international collaborative research project.
